Patient Access Specialist
Job Description
The PAS will be the first point of contact for a patient. The Patient access specialist greets and registers patients, ensuring that patients feel warm and welcome, and guiding them through the administrative aspects of their care. It will be their primary responsibility to maintain accurate medical records, verification of insurance, using scripted guidance to answer any questions on billing and to answer the telephone and direct calls.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
- Maintain compliance with EMTALA, HIPAA and all other hospital and government regulations applicable to the Admissions settings and in handling of Medical Records
- Ability to work cohesively with all disciplines and productively with people of all backgrounds
- Identify emergent patients and alert nursing staff
- Greet and check in patients while preparing patient charts
- Answer telephones in a professional manner, record messages and communicate to appropriate medical staff
- Assist patients with completion of pre-registration forms, ensuring all items are signed, and medical records are distributed
- Assist with coordinating the transfer of patients to other hospitals when necessary
- Inform patients of the costs of care being provided. Collect all fees and apply to patients’ chart
- Collect and record copayments and outstanding balances, and balance cash drawer daily
- Receive deliveries including mail from various carriers and forward to appropriate departments as needed
- Ensure the reception area and waiting rooms are clean. Regularly sanitize counters, surfaces, and reception area items
- Assist medical staff as needed
- Attend staff meetings or other company sponsored or mandated meetings as required
- Perform other duties as assigned
Requirements and Qualifications
- Education: High school graduate or equivalent is required
- American Heart Association or Red Cross BLS certification
- Experience: A minimum of one (1) year of customer service experience is preferred
- Effective written and verbal communication skills
